Jesinta Campbell

Jesinta placed as the 2nd runner-up at the Miss Universe 2010 pageant, only behind the eventual winner, Mexico's Ximena Navarrete, and the 1st runner-up Yendi Phillipps from Jamaica. Jesinta also won Miss Congeniality, becoming the second closest Miss Congeniality since Miss Universe 1955 Maribel Arrieta to winning Miss Universe. It was also the first time the Miss Congeniality winner places among the semi-finals since Miss Universe 1970.

Jesinta Campbell was crowned Miss Universe Australia 2010 after winning the pageant on June 17th 2010.

Jesinta is known for her down to earth charm and friendly personality. She is the quintessential Aussie beach girl growing up on the Gold Coast. Attending Aquinas College she was voted College Captain and was awarded the General Excellence Cup, senior drama award and a scholarship for Journalism at Bond University. During school Jesinta was heavily involved within the community, participating in charity events and volunteer work. She won a youth achievement award in 2008 for organising her own charity event “Walk for Water”, raising funds for a water stricken community.

After winning the runway section in a modelling competition in her final year of school, Jesinta deferred her Scholarship. Leaving home for Sydney she took the big leap into modelling at 17 years of age. Months later she was modelling in Shanghai on a two- month contract. Returning to Australia she continued to model throughout 2009. Her love for charities, public speaking and working with people sparked her interest to enter Miss Universe Australia 2010, she says “it was a great pathway for me to achieve my dreams.”

After winning Jesinta said she felt very honoured and privileged to be an ambassador for Australia. “I love my country and I am proud of being Australian. I encourage people to go after their dreams and I am living proof that if you set a goal, you can achieve it through hard work, determination and belief in yourself.”

Jesinta lives by the motto "There is no passion to be found in playing small...in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of." - Nelson Mandela. Since returning from Las Vegas Jesinta has been on a whirlwind ride, she has been travelling the country in fulfilling her official role as Miss Universe Australia. She has a number of ambassadorships. Her television career is blossoming and she is in demand for charity work, magazines shoots and appearances.

By Ines Min Staff reporter After another warm and bright weekend, Korea awoke to a fresh new face Monday morning. It was only moments before the announcement came that the humble 19-year-old ― originally representing Seoul ― was asked who she would, in all honesty, like to see be crowned the winner.Jung So-ra was crowned Miss Korea 2010 Sunday night at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts, downtown Seoul.Jung valiantly fought back her tears while being crowned by last year’s winner Kim Joo-ri.Dressed in a rich, navy blue dress, the doe-eyed beauty’s surprise and excitement was evident.

``I can be greedy,’’ Jung started sincerely. ``But my heart also knows how to yield. I would like for all of us to win.’’

She will be the representative national face for the coming year, a responsibility she already has an affinity and skill for. Jung, who wants to be a diplomat, already speaks four languages (including English, Chinese and Japanese along with her mother tongue), and is enrolled at the University of California, Riverside.

The young scholar is also well-rounded and mostly enjoys spending her time cooking, practicing yoga and dancing.

Kim Hye-young, 20, from North Gyeongsang Province and Jang Yun-jin, 24, from Seoul were named first runners-up. The second runners-up were Ko Hyun-young (20, from Busan), Lee Gwi-joo (19, from North Jeolla Province), Ha Hyun-jung (23, from Seoul) and Ahn Da-hye (21, from North Chungcheong Province).

The competition, hosted by actor Kim Su-ro and former Miss Korea 2000 Kim Sa-rang, saw special performances by Korean pop groups Super Junior and After School. Jazz pianist Gene Bo-ra also lent her talents during the dress parade, while JK Kim Dong-wook offered his vocals for the swimsuit edition.

Preliminary rounds for this year’s queen began in April with regional competitions. Contestants were chosen from the southernmost tip of the peninsula to across the ocean to include beauties from New York, Los Angeles and other cities.

Since the start of this month, the 56 finalists participated in a range of bonding experiences and community service activities, from taking cruise excursions to Japan to interact with the local community, to learning to make pizzas alongside children for a charity.

The top four pageant winners will go on to compete for Miss Universe, Miss International, Miss Earth and Miss World.

The event was organized by the Hankook Ilbo and Sports Hankook, sister papers of The Korea Times, and sponsored by Union Pharmacy and Alpensia Resort.
