Monaco GP : Vettel takes pole, Perez crashes
Sergio Perez's massive accident in qualifying for the Monaco GP overshadowed Sebastian Vettel's first Monaco pole position
Q3 was halted for almost 40 minutes after Perez suffered a huge accident, hitting the dividing barrier at the Nouvelle Chicane after losing control of his car over the bumps at the exit to the tunnel.
The medical staff and marshals were quickly on hand to assist the Sauber driver, who was taken directly to the local hospital in an ambulance. he was conscious and talking.
With the session resuming with just three minutes left on the clock, many expected a mad flying lap dash for pole position. However, it wasn't to be.
Instead the session came to a low-key end with Vettel on pole thanks to his earlier 1:13.556.Jenson Button will join him on the front row, having qualified ahead of Mark Webber and Fernando Alonso.

Webber: Today was my day
Mark Webber may have beaten Sebastian Vettel to pole in Spain but the Aussie says what he would rather have is the P1 on Sunday afternoon
Webber brought Vettel's run of pole positions to an end at Barcelona on Saturday, crossing the line with a 1:20.981, two-tenths up on his team-mate's best.
"It was a good session," said the Aussie, who climbed out of his car after topping Vettel's time as he realised that no-one else had the pace to beat him.
"We didn't underestimate the other guys, but Seb and I thought we would be battling for pole.
"I was just praying my time went above the number one (referring to Vettel) as I crossed the finishing line, and it did.
"It was a nice lap, a good battle with Seb, and today was my day."
And with the winner of the Spanish Grand Prix having been the driver starting from pole position on the last 10 occasions, Webber says he hopes "I can make it 11.
"I will relax tonight have a good sleep and come back tomorrow. I am looking forward to trying to get the victory tomorrow.
"If I am in this position tomorrow coming out of the last corner then I will be happy."

Qualifying: Webber ends Vettel's run
Mark Webber became the first driver to beat Sebastian Vettel to pole position this season, achieving the feat in Spain on Saturday
With Red Bull dominating this weekend's proceedings, many were expecting a Red Bull 1-2 in qualifying and the reigning World Champions delivered.
However, instead of Vettel taking pole, as he has down in all four previous races, it was Webber who bagged the coveted grid slot by 0.200s ahead of his team-mate.
Lewis Hamilton took third place while Fernando Alonso finally improved on his qualifying P5 to take fourth, 0.003s up on Jenson button.
Vitaly Petrov and Nico Rosberg were next in line ahead of Felipe Massa and Pastor Maldonado in what proved to be a very strange, uneventful and downright boring qualifying shoot-out.
Michael Schumacher qualified P10 although the German never actually set a time.

Vettel: Strange but it worked
Sebastian Vettel says it was an "odd feeling" sitting in the pits during qualifying while watching his rivals try for his pole position
Vettel was in a class of his own in qualifying for the Turkish GP, putting in a 1:25.049 to take provisional pole by 0.405s over his Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber.
And because of the German's margin over his rivals, Red Bull opted to keep both him and Webber in the pits instead of putting in a late charge.
But, while the Red Bull duo were in the pits, their rivals where out on track, unsuccessfully attempting to put an end to Red Bull's front row lock-out.
"I am very happy with the result," said the defending World Champion.
"We did not have a trouble-free morning, so we had a bit to catch up. I like the track so that helps and it was nice to see that without that many laps I was able to come back and find the rhythm.
"It was funny because Mark and myself decided to skip the second run. It is strange the feeling. The others are on track and you know they can beat you.
"You can just watch and there is nothing you can do. It is good to save a set of tyres but it is an odd feeling. I'm very happy.
"Of course we talked about it before qualifying, we talked about what can happen, you never know, you don't know how quicker the others will be, how much fuels the others have on board.
"We saw in the last race and in the other races, we see this year the races have changed and important to handle the tyre situation, for both of us after the first run we had the feeling that we might be safe but you never know, you do that again until the day arrived, and other people prove you wrong.
"In the end you never know, if it works you are a hero if it doesn't you are not."
As a result of the team's decision, both drivers have an extra set of the softer option tyres available to them for Sunday's grand prix, a move that proved to be a race-winning decision for Lewis Hamilton last time out in China.
The reigning World Champ also took the time to once again apologise to his team for Friday morning's accident, which not only gave his mechanics a lot of extra work but also meant he had to play catch-up after sitting out the afternoon session.
"Apologies to the team and mechanics - obviously I damaged the car pretty much yesterday and we couldn't run at all, we missed the session in the afternoon," said Vettel.
"But they fixed it for today and I think they did a very good job.
"So I'm very happy with the result.

Hamilton: Not pole but better than nothing
Lewis Hamilton is adamant he's "in the fight" for the Turkish GP victory after qualifying in fourth place for Sunday's race
The McLaren driver, the winner of the last grand prix in China, was one of the favourites to at least secure a spot on the front row of the Istanbul grid.
However, he had no answer to the pace of the Red Bulls while Nico Rosberg also put his resurgent Mercedes GP ahead of the McLaren driver.
"It's not pole position but it's better than nothing," Hamilton told the BBC.
"We're starting on the dirty side, but we're in the fight.
"We're not far away but now you see the Mercedes have picked up their pace and also the Ferraris have.
"I'm looking forward to a strong race. It's a long one here but there are chances to overtake and it should be good."
The one thing, though, that Hamilton doesn't have which aided his climb to the top step of the podium in China is an extra set of the softer option tyres.
And that, he admits, could cost him this Sunday.
"We don't have an extra set, we went out, whether that was right or not I don't know."

Video: Chinese Grand Prix could be 'crazy', says Sebastian Vettel
Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel admits he was surprised to be comfortably ahead of the McLaren's as he qualifies on pole for the Chinese Grand Prix, but is not getting carried away as he believes the Shanghai circuit is a "crazy place for crazy races."

Vettel: Pole is still only eight metres on the track...
Despite having commandingly claimed his sixth pole position from the last seven races and the 18th of his F1 career, still Sebastian Vettel is keeping his expectations firmly in-check ahead of Sunday's Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai
Early-season F1 2011 World Championship leader Sebastian Vettel was refusing to let himself get carried away after fairly demolishing his rivals for pole position ahead of Sunday's Chinese Grand Prix – his third in Shanghai in swift succession and his sixth from the last seven races full-stop – stressing that in reality, it's still only worth 'eight metres on the track tomorrow'.
Despite pacing all three practice sessions around the Shanghai International Circuit – where two years ago he led Red Bull Racing to its breakthrough F1 victory ahead of team-mate Mark Webber – there was still some doubt heading into qualifying as to whether Vettel would ultimately have the legs of the fast-improving McLaren-Mercedes' of Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton. On only his first run in Q3, he wasted little time in demonstrating that he did.
Laying down a commanding marker a staggering seven tenths of a second clear of Button, Hamilton's sole effort later on would make no indent either, and when the former failed to improve on his second flying lap, Vettel aborted his, safe in the knowledge that the 18th pole of his grand prix career was comfortably in the bag.
“We have done it again, but every single time is tough,” the 23-year-old underlined. “Today wasn't as straightforward as we planned, especially in Q2 – I made a bit of a mistake on the run I did then – but in Q3, I was confident that we would be able to improve quite a lot.
“Obviously, today we did a good job, but it's just eight metres on the track tomorrow. It will be a long race, but I think we can be happy with the car. We did some good long runs on Friday, so we have a reason to feel good, but it's also a threat to feel too good – and I pay attention that doesn't happen.”
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner similarly hailed his young protégé's performance, pointing out that having canned his second 'flyer' in the top ten shoot-out, Vettel will now have an extra set of soft tyres available to him on race day compared to fellow front row-sitter Button.
“A third consecutive pole for Sebastian and, as he wasn't required to complete his second run in Q3, he was able to conserve his tyres for tomorrow,” reflected the Englishman. “[It was] an excellent performance from him today – a really fantastic first lap. We weren't sure what Lewis' pace was going to be, which is why we ran again – but in the end, it turned out that we didn't need to.”
“An impressive display from Sebastian again,” concurred Cyril Dumont, from RBR engine partner Renault. “What pace – three races and three pole positions – so congratulations to him!”

Qualifying: Vettel's reign continues
There really is no stopping Sebastian Vettel at the moment as the reigning World Champ claimed his third pole of the season in China
Vettel will line up in P1 for tomorrow's Chinese Grand Prix, followed by McLaren's Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton with Nico Rosberg in fourth.
All the drama of the session occured in Q1 with Mark Webber going out and Q2 which eliminated Michael Schumacher and Nick Heidfeld and limited Vitaly Petrov's ambitions after he stopped out on track.

Vettel: I knew my RB7 had it
Sebastian Vettel admits he would not have pipped Lewis Hamilton to pole in Malaysia had it not been for his Red Bull's KERS
The reigning World Champion's title defence got off to the best start possible in Australia where he claimed pole position and the race victory.
However, he had to achieve both without the added KERS power-boost as Red Bull ran into a few issues with their unit.
But, after using the unit in Friday's practice at Sepang, the team opted to continue with it on Saturday where Vettel narrowly beat Hamilton to pole position by 0.104s.
And the German concedes that would not have been possible without KERS.
"I would say so, definitely it was quite a challenging weekend until qualifying," said Vettel.
"I was happy with the car but we never got into a rhythm so yesterday was not as smooth as we hoped for and also this morning we knew we had it in the car, the main thing was believing in it.
"We got criticism last time for not running it (KERS) and we came here and solved most of our problems and I think if we would not have it today then we would not be here, both of us, so it is a great achievement, compliments to those guys. We are pleased."
Qualifying, though, was the first time this weekend that Vettel had topped a session, admitting that it had not been the "smooth" build-up he would have wanted.
"It was not a particular problem with the car, nothing broke down. It was not smooth, we did not have the laps we wanted. A little bit of traffic, I did mistakes, so it did not come together as nicely. Now we focus on tomorrow."
Meanwhile, team boss Christian Horner confirmed that both his drivers had used KERS in qualifying, although Mark Webber had an issue with his unit.
"In all honesty, no I didn't expect it. An absolutely fantastic lap from Seb," he told the BBC.
"The McLarens have been quick all weekend. Mark had a little KERS alarm that we're looking at, but I don't think it was anything significant."

Qualifying: It's Vettel by a wing
Sebastian Vettel put in a phenomenal lap to take pole position away from Lewis Hamilton in Malaysia on Saturday
Having topped the final practice session, many were expected Hamilton to take the coveted grid slot. And the McLaren driver looked to have it in the bag when he clocked a 1:35.000.
Hamilton, though, went quicker still, taking 0.024s off his time. But coming up behind him on the track was Vettel.
The German put in a stunning effort to cross the line with a 1:34.870, snatching pole position off his McLaren rival.
Mark Webber and Jenson Button were left to watch their respective team-mates battle it out as they just didn't have the pace to get involved in the fight.
It was another lackluster outing for Ferrari with Fernando Alonso P5 and Felipe Massa P7 with Nick Heidfeld slotting in between the two.
The session was red-flagged for four minutes during Q1 when a piece of Sebastien Buemi's bodywork, part of his sidepod cover, came flying off his Toro Rosso.

The Vettel Diaries: 'Pressing the advantage'
Sebastian Vettel put his RB6 on pole position for the 10th time this season and will line up on Sunday with championship leader Fernando Alonso lining up directly behind him. But the young German hardly has time to catch his breath before he's engulfed by a pack of news hounds hungry for his every comment...
"It was really close today. At the start of qualifying we were weighing up whether to do one or two runs. We decided to go out once but for a long stint. In the end, the decision paid off and I'm very happy with the result.
We are the subject of intense scrutiny this weekend. We're not looking anywhere else either; we're just concentrating on our own performance. We really to get a good start tomorrow, give it our best shot and battle all the way to the chequered flag. I think the first lap is going to be more crucial than ever and I'll need to keep my concentration up for every second.
After all I still have an outside chance of becoming world champion – although I'm going to need luck to be on my side too. But as I've said many times before, I'm trying not to think about, because it'll only be a distraction. The most important thing is to make a good start and have a quick and reliable car. Everything else will work itself out over the course of the race.
I've got no time to stop and think anyway because we've got a packed schedule of interviews for the rest of the day and into the evening. After the media I'll be going to a team meeting to discuss what we did today and how we can improve our performance tomorrow. After that, I really need to get something to eat and go straight to bed so I'm fit for the big day."

Qualifying: Vettel claims 10th pole of 2010
Sebastian Vettel put himself in pole position to win Sunday's Abu Dhabi GP, taking the coveted grid slot in an intense qualifying session
The Red Bull racer, who would do his chances of winning the World title the world of good by winnning the showdown come Sunday afternoon, crossed the line with a 1:39.394.
And although Lewis Hamilton came close to pipping Vettel, he ultimately fell 0.031s short.
Fernando Alonso will line up in third place, 0.398s off the pace, and has the advantage of having Jenson Button as a buffer between himself and his main rival for the title, Mark Webber.
A scruffy qualifying in which Red Bull left it rather late saw Webber finish down in fifth place.
Meanwhile, Robert Kubica lost his record of being the only non-Red Bull driver to make it through to the final qualifying segment in all this season's races. He dropped out in Q2, putting his car into 11th place.

Qualifying: Maiden pole for rookie Hulkenberg
Williams' rookie driver Nico Hulkenberg claimed his first-ever F1 pole position in impressive style in Brazil on Saturday
Qualifying began on a wet track, however, as the hour progressed, the dry line became more prominant, allowing the drivers to push and finally swap to slick in the final five minutes. This caused problems for some with Robert Kubica and Mark Webber both sliding around the track.
But for Hulkenberg is it perfect.
With his Williams race-seat reportedly on the line, the rookie moved to the top of the timesheets and continued on for another lap while his rivals put in their best efforts, crossing the line behind him.
Vettel, Mark Webber and Lewis Hamilton all took a turn in the P2 slot, however, none of the Championship rivals were able to better Hulkenberg's time.
But that didn't stop the German from completing his final flying lap - one more than the rest - to extend his lead to 1.049s over the chasing pack.
First pole position for the German rookie and it couldn't have come at a better time.
Vettel was second quickest, ahead of Webber, Hamilton and Fernando Alonso.
Meanwhile, Jenson Button was the big casualty from the title five as the McLaren driver could only manage 11th place, dropping out in Q2.

Qualifying: Alonso pulls of Singapore stunner
Fernando Alonso claimed his second pole of 2010 as the Ferrari driver pulled off a stunning upset, defeating the Bulls in Singapore
In what proved to be one of the best qualifying sessions of the season, it quickly become apparant that the battle was between Alonso and Sebastian Vettel for the coveted grid slot. And they did not disappoint.
On their final flying laps, Vettel ahead of Alonso on the track, the Red Bull racer moved ahead in the first sector only to have Alonso better his time. However, Vettel pulled it back in the second, only to once again lose out to Alonso.
And in the final sector, as he crossed the line, Vettel was 0.067s down on Alonso's previous best lap time, meaning the Spaniard could have parked his car. However, he didn't, opting instead to finish the lap, although even he could not top his earlier 1:45.390.
Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button were third and fourth ahead of Mark Webber, Rubens Barrichello, Nico Rosberg, Robert Kubica, Michael Schumacher and Kamui Kobayashi.
Meanwhile, Felipe Massa caused qualify to run a six minutes longer than usual as he brought out the red flags in Q1 when his P10 broke down out on track with a suspected electronic problem.
