Mark Webber warns lawmakers not to take away the purity of Formula One

Red Bull driver Mark Webber has warned Formula One’s rule makers they risk destroying the ‘purity’ of the sport after introducing a host of measures designed to liven up races.

Drivers will have to cope with new moveable rear wings and the reintroduction of the KERS power boost system this season, both of which are meant to lead to more overtaking.

In addition, new tyre supplier, Pirelli, has produced a range of rubber which will need replacing with far greater regularity.

‘It is going to be as spectacular,’ Webber said ahead of Sunday’s season-opener in Melbourne. ‘But are we going too far to perhaps take the purity out of it? That is the thing that we need to get right.’

The drivers will be required to push more buttons than ever in the cockpit, something Webber, 34, likens to ‘tapping your head and rubbing your tummy’.

But he feels the biggest challenge will be getting to grips with the new tyres.

‘It opens things up more for mistakes on strategy, on pitstops, on calls from the cockpit and calls from the pit wall,’ he said.
